Triathlon 101

For those of you not familiar with triathlon and it's disciplines, a triathlon is a timed race over a 3 part course of a pre determined length. There are 3 sports; Swimming, Biking, and Running. Traditionally, the race is ran in that order with the swim 1st, bike 2nd, and run 3rd, but there are the odd races that are run in reverse or in a different order. The event is timed from start to finish with transition areas between sports that store gear for the upcoming portion of the race. (Commonly called T1 Swim/Bike and T2 Bike/Run)

There are primarily 4 distances of a triathlon course.

  • Sprint           820yd Swim, 12mi Bike, 3.1mi Run (5k) - Sprint Swim/Bike can vary

  • Olympic        1640yd Swim, 24.8mi Bike, 6.2mi Run (10K)

  • 1/2 Ironman  1.2mi Swim, 56mi Bike, 13.2mi Run (1/2 Marathon)

  • Ironman        2.4mi Swim, 112mi Bike, 26.2mi Run (Marathon)
